For Gmail users, you will now be able to try out Gmail’s new look way ahead before its full rollout later in the year. And from those got to try it out, the reaction was that its interface has some similarities with Google+.
Full instructions on how to activate the “Preview” and Preview (Dense)” themes can be found in their “New Look” website.
Why are there 2 preview themes?
Google explains that eventually, Gmail’s new look will adjust automatically depending on display resolutions and on how much info is packed onto the screen. But for the time being, the switch is manual. Users will be able to switch between old and new looks until such time Google implement the new look as default.
Reaction from Gmail users say that they like the minimal polished look, and that it is very appealing. For now though, Google Labs features are still not fully integrated, but Google say that they are working on it and so with updated versions of some popular themes for Gmail.
Also on the works is the long awaited Google Calendar updates which will also follow the design of Gmail and Google+. Said updates on Calendar will roll out in a few days.
All in all, the facelift done by Google on their platforms is but a reaction to the unveiling of their social media platform Google+. With all the hype Google is getting from their entry into social media, I’m pretty sure that more facelifts are on the works.
